Where Are Some Places Our Team Can Perform?
One great place to perform and promote your ministry at the same time is in a town parade. For several years, our team entered a float in the annual Memorial Day parade. For the theater we used a 16-20′ flatbed trailer donated and pulled by a contractor in our church. We used half inch plywood laid on its side all the way around to form the theater.
One year we painted it to look like a house and another year it was red, white, and blue for a patriotic theme. On the side of the theater was printed our church name, address, and phone number in large, easy to read letters. You could also advertise your puppet team or church website. The puppeteers sat on chairs in the theater while performing.
To run the sound, we placed a small generator in the back of the pickup truck pulling the trailer and built a plywood box around it to help muffle the generator’s sound. Lead cords ran from the generator to power our sound system. We used pre-recorded songs and had one microphone set up to make announcements.
When it came to performing, our whole team of eight to ten puppeteers was inside, but took turns working puppets. The goal was to have five or six puppets up each song which allowed two or three puppeteers to rest. We used two or three songs since the audience was continually changing and repeated them over and over and only took breaks during stretches where there were no people.
Adults and young people also walked in front of the float handing out candy and promotional information. The puppets entertained and promoted and our church participated in a community event. It was a great opportunity all the way around.
